CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“IS IT YOUR INTENT to stay?” Lord Lachlann dusted his hands free of crumbs over his empty trencher.

She was near done with her meal, save for a portion of the sweet bread she wanted to enjoy with the final sips of the potent wine that was easing the ache in her feet. She swallowed hastily to answer. “If I can find means to.”

“You still remember nothing?”

“Nothing of value to me. Or you.”

He studied her again. She returned the scrutiny.

With care to his words, he explained. “My lord Androw charged me with my sister’s safety on her wedding day. I was knighted in the clan for that service. Captain Egann runs the guard, and I am happy to assist in its leadership.”

She nodded her understanding and was also aware that conversation near them had ceased. Every word spoken would be carried elsewhere, just as the story of that night at Breda’s had spread. The scrutiny of so many made the back of her neck itch.

He continued. “You may appeal to him for a place in the guard.”

“But you believe it unlikely that he will accept me.”

“Your axe he would welcome. The rest of you is too rare for his purposes.”

She didn’t care for that answer, but it wasn’t in her power to change it. “Am I too rare for your purposes?”

The rude man next to her snickered but left off at Lachlann’s narrow-eyed warning.

“You are rare enough to be what I didn’t know was lacking. Kirst— Lady Kirstine has always been protected by the guards in Lord Androw’s antechamber who took shifts at the top of the stairs. This absence of his is unprecedented for its length. When gone for a week or two we simply changed the rotation of guards. Lord Androw will be gone a year or longer.”

A serving girl paused to offer him more wine, which he accepted. After a large swallow and approving grunt, he continued. “She has refused to allow me to permanently station men there, pleading the virtue of her young maid. I understand her fear and weariness of gossip.” He paused for another swallow from his tankard. “Yet I am not happy that there is no weapon between the stair and her bedchamber should anyone slip past my own guards, or in my absence.”

“So I might meet her approval? As a night guard?” It was less than her capabilities and the lord knew it. Nevertheless, she knew she would agree to the posting. With every minute she grew more certain that this was the path forward in her life she was called to take.

Of course .

“Something like. A bodyguard, as required.” Though he’d partaken of twice the wine she had, his gaze was steady and alert as he glanced around the room. “If she will listen to reason.”

She allowed herself a glance over his head at the high table. Kirstine, her manner polite and measured, was conversing with the woman on her right. Her gaze flicked to Skyra without change in expression.

Lachlann watched as Skyra finished her sweet bread and jam.
